Rohde & Schwarz, as one of the biggest measurement technology manufactures in the world, produces measurement devices for several industries such as mobile wireless connections. The global company with its 10.000 employees is headquartered in Munich and still has a manufacturing facility in Memmingen, which is one hour away from Munich.
Visiting the production plant
On a sunny Wednesday in May we got the chance to see how Rohde & Schwarz, as a high-tech company is producing in Germany. As part of the course ‘Technopreneurship: Sustainable Technology Management’ the students had the opportunity to witness how an international tech-company from Germany is manufacturing, facing the digitization and is coping with sustainable technologies. Lectured by Prof. Dippold, ‘Technopreneurship: Sustainable Technology Management’ focuses on business activities that have impacts on Sustainability. Rohde & Schwarz takes Sustainability, CSR and the strategic Management of Technologies and Innovations as a competetive advantage, supporting the core message of the module, that various opportunities for eco-innovations and social innovations, can put tech-companies ahead of their competition.
So many questions
Who knows more about the products of a company than someone from the R&D department? No one, exactly! The tour was guided by a developer who gave us a short insight about the company history, its products, its sales & marketing strategy and philosophy, as well as Rohde & Schwarz’s approach to meet the today’s sustainable standards. Not having the chance to talk to someone who deals with digital products all day long, the BE.Di students had loads of questions regarding Rohde & Schwarz’s products as well as manufacturing.
Factory tour – no photos please!
Appareled with Rohde & Schwarz factory coats the students were ready to enter the holy halls of manufacturing. Looking just like the other Rohde & Schwarz workers who were building the measurement devices at the moment, the students perfectly fit into the scene. Starting at the disposition zone, with its state of the art pick-by-voice system the team made their way by 3-D printer, soldering and coating stations, as well as the R&D department which is located in the heart of the manufacturing hall.
Get together and lunch
After the exciting factory tour the group headed towards the factory canteen to be surprised by a very delicious meal. With the many impressions of the tour and the presentation, the students had induced chats about the testing-devices industry, the working-life in Memmingen and job opportunities at Rohde & Schwarz and took the time to talk to the tour guide and professor.
